On 20 March, representatives of JSC “KOMINBANK” visited the Kyiv College of Trade and Economics, part of the State University of Trade and Economics, to tell students about the history of the hryvnia.
The lecture was developed using materials from the National Bank of Ukraine, the Money Museum and the ‘Talon’ Centre for Financial Knowledge.
The students were able to view Kyiv’s landmarks from a different perspective: they learnt where and how our national currency originated, and took a virtual tour of the streets and places associated with its creation. They heard where and under what circumstances Ukrainian monetary traditions took shape, how symbols of statehood changed with the times, and why Kyiv was the centre of these transformations. They saw, through slides, the evolution from the gold and silver coins of Kievan Rus’ to the banknotes of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, designed by the eminent Heorhii Narbut.
The experts helped the young people to understand the hryvnia not merely as a means of payment, but as the embodiment of our identity and the continuity of our history — from the times of the princes to the present day.
