As is known, fraud and theft on the part of bank employees are the most frequent crimes in financial institutions. At the same time, the bank's management, when it comes to not very large sums, prefers not to turn to law enforcement, fearing damage to its reputation in the eyes of clients. It is clear that involvement with large amounts of money pushes unscrupulous bank employees to theft, and only a perfect security system and access control to financial accounts and the cash vault can stop them. Bankers all over the world have repeatedly been convinced that one should not save on security measures.
Currently, an increasing number of reputable banks are resorting to a biometric access control system. The «pioneer» among Ukrainian banks was the Commercial Industrial Bank — recently a security system based on biometric data was implemented there. Thus, CIB, which is the domestic leader in the number of investments in high technologies, confirmed the title of the most high-tech bank of Ukraine in 2010.
The access control system with the use of biometric identification, implemented at the bank by the specialists of the «EDAPS» consortium, is absolutely reliable, since it is not for nothing that similar technologies are also used by the international criminal police INTERPOL.
«Over 17 years of its work, the Commercial Industrial Bank has become a leader among banks investing in high technologies, which allows us to constantly introduce technical innovations and develop the security system», — says Ivan Fediv, Deputy Chairman of the bank's Management Board.
The principle of operation of the biometric identification system (currently it works only for employees, over time it is planned also for bank clients) is fairly simple, but absolutely excludes unauthorized intervention, in particular in the bank's cash department. Fingerprints of two fingers of the person who needs to gain access to the bank's confidential zones are registered using a high-quality scanner, and then entered onto a contactless card.
During the access control check, information from the card is read and simultaneously the employee's finger is scanned. «A fingerprint, unlike a card, cannot be transferred to an outside person, lost, copied, or used unnoticed», — is confident Dmytro Povesma, Director of the «EDAPS» Biometric Technologies Center.
Another vulnerability of the banking system is fraud during cashless settlements with the use of bank cards. Particularly unreliable are cards with a magnetic stripe, and there are not infrequent cases when holders find themselves short of significant sums of money. At the Commercial Industrial Bank, this problem has also been solved.
Not long ago, the bank received a certificate of compliance with the PCI DSS information security standards of the international payment systems Visa and MasterCard, which made it possible to even more reliably protect the bank's clients and their finances.
